However, once you have taken that last nibble, you&#8217;ll wonder just what to do with the empty basket. Before you toss it in the back of a cupboard and forget about it, consider using it as a beautiful planter. An old basket can serve you well for many years. All you need to do is prepare it to provide your favourite plant with a safe home.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Types of baskets<\/h2>\n<p>The thicker the basket, the more sturdy it will prove. If your basket is particularly flimsy, you might not want to use it to hold a heavy plant. Instead, plant a succulent since you will not need to worry about heavy potting soil either.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Prepare your old basket<\/h2>\n<p>You can give your basket an extra layer of protection by applying a clear spray or wood sealant to the interior and exterior. Make sure that you do this in an area with plenty of ventilation. Allow the sealant or spray to dry thoroughly before you add any potting soil.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Lining your basket<\/h2>\n<p>Next, you will need to line the basket so that you don&#8217;t end up with soil everywhere. Plastic liners can be found at your local garden centre or you can use a plastic bag like those used to line your bin. Secure the edges of the liner in place by using hot glue. Cut just a few slits in the bottom of the bag to allow excess water to escape. Burlap is another great options if you want to create more of a rustic design.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Add your plant<\/h2>\n<p>Next, you need to add some potting soil and then your plant. Top with more potting soil to secure the plant in place and water thoroughly. Allow water to flow out through the bottom before placing on a drainage tray and displaying your plant.<\/p>\n<p>An old basket can really help save you time and money when searching for a new planter for your growing potted plants.
