No two beers are alike and there are some very distinct flavours if you know what to look for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, here are some terms and definitions:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aroma hop \u2013 hops that are added later\nfor aroma and floral notes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alpha acid \u2013 the active component of\nthe hop that gives beers their bitterness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beta acid \u2013 the active component of\nthe hop that adds to the aroma<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Base malts \u2013 grains that are heated\nbut not roasted to help create the main base of the malt selection<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bittering hop \u2013 added early in the\nprocess for bitterness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cellaring \u2013 storing and preserving\nbeers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esters \u2013 a chemical compound that is\ncreated during the brewing process. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malts \u2013 grains\nused as part of the base to make beer \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skunked \u2013 light\ndamage to the beer which gives it a skunky aroma<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A guide to tasting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beer tasting is\nnot quite as formal as wine tasting. You don&#8217;t have to use any formal\nrules and the words used to describe the various flavours and aromas\nare more direct. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Citrus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This flavour is\npredominant in heavily hopped IPAs. The beer will smell and taste a\nbit like citrus fruits like lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dank<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an intense\nhop smell that is particularly pungent. It is noticeable from several\nfeet away and it smells much like fresh hop resin. It is often found\nin beers that are made with fresh, wet and unprocessed hops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grassy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These beers smell\nlike freshly cut grass or green leaves. When the scent is described\nmore like hay, it is usually a bottom fermented beer like a lager or\nit could be used to criticise beers that have been hopped too long. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Piney<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to\nthat pine tree scent. It could be a compliment or it can be used to\ncriticise the beer. If you enjoy bold IPAs, you might enjoy this pine\nflavour. If the flavour is not perfectly balanced, however, it can\noverpower the rest of the beer flavours. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are some of\nthe top flavours and aromas to look for when beer tasting.
