While many people think that alcohol doesn’t go bad, the truth is that fluctuations in temperature, exposure to light, and oxidation can cause any spirit to deteriorate. The colour and flavour of the alcohol will be altered as a result.
\nMany types of alcohol is aged in wood barrels before being bottled. Some people believe that the alcohol has aged at this point and that their flavour will no longer change. This is not the case and alcohol continues to age even after bottled. Most types of alcohol, if the bottle is sealed and stored in the right conditions, will improve after some time. Once opened and exposed to the elements, the contents of the bottle can deteriorate rapidly.
\nIt’s important to remember that different types of alcohol have different \u201cexpiration\u201d dates. Many vodka producers recommend consuming the bottle within 2 years of purchase. Storing the bottle any longer can compromise the flavour and quality. Unopened, vodka should be just fine after several years but, even if you only enjoy one shot from the bottle, it will crack the seal and the alcohol will start to evaporate.
\nWhisky also maintains its flavour if the bottle is sealed and properly stored. There are a number of bottles out there that are decades old and still good for drinking. However, once opened, it should be consumed within a year.
\nIf you enjoy Tequila, you should note that an opened bottle is only good for about 2 months! All the more reason to open your bottle with a friend or even a few friends. An opened bottle of rum will only maintain its flavour for about 3 months so this is another bottle that needs to be consumed sooner rather than later.
\nChampagne will start to lose its bubbles once opened and flat champagne is not particularly appealing. Both wine and sparkling wine will start to lose its flavour and can even turn into vinegar if left out long enough.
\nRemember, alcohol does not necessarily go bad but it won’t taste nearly as good. Old alcohol might not make you sick since bacteria cannot survive thanks to the alcohol content.
