Why are Roses so Popular for Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day and roses go together like peanut butter and jelly. But have you ever wondered why roses, especially red roses, are the quintessential symbol of love on this special day? Here, I will delve into the history and meaning of roses to help you discover their timeless allure.

How did roses become a Symbol of Love?

Roses are not only beautiful but have long been associated with romance. Historically, they’ve been used to convey emotions that words often fail to express, tracing back to ancient Greek stories of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, who forever linked roses with romance and devotion.

The red rose, in particular, stands out as the universal emblem of love in the Language of Flowers. With their rich hues, delightful scent, and heartfelt message, they’re an irresistible choice for Valentine’s Day flowers, and the reason I never pass up the chance to share them with my loved ones.

Coloured Roses and Their Meanings

While red roses are the classic symbol of love and desire, other colors carry their own unique meanings. Pink roses display admiration and gentle affection. They present the same heartfelt sentiment as red roses but offer a softer, more delicate expression of love. They’re a lovely choice for someone special, and always my personal favorite!

Yellow roses are often associated with friendship and joy, perfect for expressing platonic love. They’re ideal for gifting to friends, family, or colleagues, making any gesture feel thoughtful and heartfelt without the romantic undertones. Understanding these meanings can help you choose a beautiful bouquet that speaks volumes. Learn more about flower colours and meanings.

Choosing The Right Bouquet

Today, gifting a bouquet of roses remains one of the most timeless expressions of love. Whether it’s a single stem or a grand gesture, roses are still among the most cherished gifts for her on Valentine’s Day. Their effortless elegance and simple beauty create a sense of luxury that’s still accessible, ideal for anyone looking to make a memorable impression.

Choosing a beautiful bouquet of roses doesn’t require any professional skills. Consider the color that best suits the occasion, and start by selecting a reliable variety; Avalanche and Memory Lane are great options, known for their full, elegant blooms. I sometimes pair them with complementary flowers and greenery to add texture and depth. The key is to keep it simple and let the roses be the star of the show.

How to Care for Your Roses

To extend the life of your roses, I start by trimming the stems at a diagonal angle, which helps them drink more water. Place them into a clean vase filled with fresh water, and remove any guard petals. Don’t forget to remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, as they can cause bacteria to grow.

Change the water every couple of days, and if you have flower food, mix it into the water according to the packet; it really does make a difference. Keep your roses away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fruit bowls (ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers fade faster). Gently remove any wilting petals to keep the bouquet looking fresh.

With a little extra care, your roses can last up to a week or even longer, letting you enjoy their beauty well past Valentine’s Day. More rose care tips
